We set up CarJet.com in 1998 when we presented the world with one of the first on-line car rental companies. In that time we’ve become known and trusted by over 2 million customers as a source of reliable, low-cost car hire.
This latest version of our website was conceived as a way of empowering our customers. It allows you to search, filter, compare and book the very best deals in cheap car rentals in Spain, Portugal – wherever your travels take you.
Despite the new look, our friendly, professional “CarJet People” are still here to help. We’ve expanded our opening hours so that we’re reachable from 8am – 6pm weekdays and 9am – 5pm at weekends (UK local time). As always, we’re open every day of the year (except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day).

Back in 1998 when we presented the world with our concept – a low-cost on-line car rental company – we suffered cackles of incredulity from the more established quarters of the car hire industry. Now, 13 years on we operate our car hire programme in a staggering 52 countries worldwide on all five continents. When we first started, car companies and competitors found it amazing that we turned the ‘small print’ into the big headlines on our websites. Our customers could see exactly what’s included (and what’s not) at every one of our 1812 locations.
We have a mission, a crusade if you will, to provide our customers with the same levels of ethical, responsible and reliable shopping here on-line as they demand (and get) in their off-line worlds. We allow customers to return and get a refund on any item prior to departure without penalty and, when your holiday plans change or on days of massive flight disruption, you’ll find us a refreshing difference to the world of cancellation charges, no-show penalties and booking ammendment fees offered by our competitors. We call our policy a trust relationship with our customers. In an on-line environment full of start-ups (and some pretty public shut-downs) it’s nice to know that you can deal with the same people, worldwide.
The secret of our success
Part of our spectacular growth since 1998 has been our permanent investment in technology. Today, we operate more than 100 websites worldwide, together with our business and franchise partners, serving over 500,000 customers from every corner of the globe. A startling 90% of all our bookings are now processed in a purely electronic environment with no human intervention whatsoever. Everything from bookings, confirmations, payments – even our bill payment to our suppliers is automated. We love technology : it gives us the response times that our customers demand, it allows us to reduce our overheads to a minimum (so we can be even cheaper for our customers) and it frees our staff from doing mundance roles and puts them out on the ‘front desk’ where they can assist our customers by telephone.Rather than move our call centres to India, or charge up to a pound a minute on premium lines (like our competitors), we offer 12 hours of (standard rate) telephone support in English and Spanish year round. We understand that situations will arise where you’d like to talk to someone briefly and get your call answered quickly when doing so. We recruit our staff not as ‘sellers’ (we don’t even pay commission!) but as front-desk staff. People to assist our people. So if you need to return a car early (and save a few days rental into the bargain) or cancel, you’ll find they’re just as enthusiastic about it as they are about confirming your new booking.What’s really great about an e-commerce environment is just how close we feel to our customers. Over half of all our business comes from recommendation and referral between exisiting users of our network on the strength of our reliability and our value for money.In 13 years, we’ve seen a lot of internet start-up’s come along (and go) with a bang. The latest fad is ‘cross selling’ which explains why car hire suddenly being packaged up with your flight, or pizza. But these businesses are in the ‘fulfillment’ game : offering unbranded services that can be repackaged electronically to improve the profit of a low-cost flight. Frequently, you’re paying a hefty premium to book your car through your airline and accepting insurance conditions that are ‘all included’ until, as you might expect, something goes wrong.
