Asturias Airport is located on Spain’s green, northern coast (indeed, it’s called the Costa Verde, which means ‘Green Coast’). An Asturias Airport car hire is the best way to explore the region. The Asturias features a dramatic coastline dotted with colourful fishing villages. Lush green countryside and mountain ranges including the Picos de Europa provide the backdrop. There are also some great beaches around Ribadeo, Llanes, Nueva, Cudillero, and Ribadesella. Amongst them is the beautiful Cuevas del Mar, famous for its natural stone arches which the sea has carved over the years. Cuevas del Mar is just 2kms from Nueva. Another beach loved for its rocky formations is Cathedrals Beach, close to Ribadeo.
For something altogether more curious, head to Playa de Gulpiyuri, which you’ll find about halfway between Llanes and Ribadesella. Playa de Gulpiyuri was formed as a result of a flooded sinkhole. And it might just be the world’s only seawater beach surrounded by land! Despite being enclosed, the sea reaches the beach through a series of underground tunnels.
Oviedo, the capital of the Asturias, is around 30kms inland from the coast. The city’s medieval history is evident in the picturesque historic quarter. The city’s cathedral is a national monument. Several other churches nearby are also national monuments. They include Santa Maria del Naranco and San Miguel de Lillo to the north of the city. The Church of Santa Cristina de Lena about 30kms south of Oviedo is another national monument. UNESCO awarded them with World Heritage Site status. The Museum of Fine Arts and Archaeological Museum are another two cultural gems in the city.
