Located on Spain’s popular Mediterranean coast, Murcia Airport is a small airport serving the Costa Calida and wider Murcia region. If you’re planning to fly here, renting a car hire is the most convenient way to travel onwards and get around the region. This is because other options for travel to/from the airport are limited to taxis and private transfers. To be fair, there is also a bus that goes between the airport and Santiago de la Ribera, a beach town 3kms away but the service is very infrequent. And unless Santiago de la Ribera is your final destination, you’ll need to go to the bus station there to pick up a bus elsewhere. So we really aren’t lying when we say renting a car is the best thing to do! In this post, we take you through the process of collecting a Murcia Airport car hire.
We also have a guide to returning a car hire to Murcia Airport up on our blog. And if you still need to book a car hire, you can search and compare prices from a range of international and local suppliers on our Murcia Airport page.
Murcia-San Javier Airport
The airport’s full name is Murcia-San Javier after the city it’s located by. Whilst, Murcia, the capital of the region, is about 50kms away, the nearest beach town is just 3kms away. And for the one million plus people that use the airport, the coastal location is an advantage. Because rather than heading to Murcia, many head straight to one of the beach towns on the Costa Calida. Indeed, the airport is particularly convenient for beaches around Mar Menor and the ever popular La Manga del Mar Menor strip. In addition to having beaches right on its doorstep, the AP-7 motorway and N-332 coastal road is also easily accessible from the airport.

However, it’s looking like the airport will – at some point – be replaced by a new Murcia Airport. When that will be is still uncertain. We’ll have more on the new Murcia Airport soon. But for now and probably another year, Murcia-San Javier is likely to still be around and welcoming flights.
Collecting a Murcia Airport car hire: who’s here?
There are just a few companies with an actual desk inside the airport terminal. They are: Europcar (and InterRent who are a subsidiary), Goldcar–Rhodium and Firefly. Their desks are located in Baggage Reclaim, right by the exit doors to the Arrivals Hall. If you’re already in the region and collecting a car hire from the airport, the desks are accessible via secondary windows that open into the Arrivals Hall. And their rentals are parked in the airport car park.
Here’s Goldcar and Europcar’s desk. Firefly’s desk is also nearby. And the picture below that is a look at the car hire desks from the Arrivals Hall.

Although not actually located inside the terminal, local car hire company, Dickmanns, have a mobile office in the airport’s P1 car park. The P1 car park is across the road from the terminal. If you’ve pre-booked with them, your car should already be in the car park ready for pick-up.

Off-site car hire companies providing a shuttle bus service
Other car hire companies have offices a short distance from the airport and provide shuttle buses between the terminal and their office. They include: Centauro, OK Rent-a-Car and Keddy by Europcar. And if you’re collecting a Murcia Airport car hire from one of them or another off-site brand, do always check your booking voucher for instructions.
Murcia Airport Parking
Once you’ve completed the paperwork and collected the keys, you’ll find car hires in P2 Parking. Just head outside the terminal, walk towards your right and you’re there! Europcar, Goldcar and Firefly should have staff available in the car park to help out if you have any questions. Don’t forget to check the car for scratches etc. And make sure the paperwork reflects everything it should.
