El Hierro Airport is the main gateway to El Hierro, the smallest and furthest south of the Canary Islands. The only way to fly in to El Hierro is via Gran Canaria Airport or Tenerife North Airport. There are also ferries that go to El Hierro’s port at Valverde from the port at Los Cristianos in Tenerife.

Like the other Canary Islands, El Hierro is volcanic in nature and is full of incredible and diverse landscapes. It also has a great network of roads so you can easily explore the island with a car hire. And as the island is so small (it’s less than 270 square kilometres), you can see a lot of it. The airport is located a short distance from Valverde, the island’s capital. Valverde is a pretty hilltop city and makes a good base for exploring more of the island from.

Not only has the island been given UNESCO World Biosphere status, it’s also the first island to be 100% sustainable. Natural highlights include rich forests, a rugged coastline and over 800 volcanoes! Along its coast, you’ll also find some lovely coves and lagoons such as Charco Manso at the top of the island and Charco Azul in the east. Pozo de las Calcosas in the north is another great natural swimming spot.

There are plenty of good hiking trails on the island and other popular activities include paragliding, mountain biking and caving. The waters around the island are super clear and there are an impressive 46 dive spots to choose from.
