Whilst many visitors to the region head straight to the beaches of the Costa del Sol, a visit inland offers a more authentic taste of Andalucia. Of course, for visitors to Granada, the star attraction is the Alhambra. Perched on top of a hill, it stands out majestically with the Sierra Nevada mountains serving as the backdrop. And when explored more closely, you’ll find a fantastically preserved Moorish palace and fortress that is a feast for the eyes.

Granada, however, has much more to offer besides the Alhambra. After my first visit, I couldn’t wait to get back! It really is a fascinating city to explore. Highlights include the whitewashed cave houses in the Albayzin neighbourhood and the colourful Barrio Realejo. Both are great for a spot of aimless wandering. The city is also full of pretty squares such as Campo del Principe – all great places to soak up the sunshine, do some people watching and enjoy the local cuisine. In addition, Granada is one of the best places to sample two of Andalucia’s best loved traditions: tapas and flamenco.
