Santa Cruz de La Palma, the island’s capital, is just a few kilometres drive north of La Palma Airport. The capital is where many ferries come in from other Canarian islands. And once you’re on the island, you’ll find a great network of roads, which makes it easy to get around with a car hire. The capital is a good base to explore more of La Palma from. It has a lovely old town with beautiful and colourful houses lining its narrow streets. It also has a beach and a promenade, which is good for strolling and soaking up the sunshine.
Like its sister islands, La Palma is packed with incredible landscapes as a result of its volcanic origins. And there are over a thousand kilometres of hiking trails on the island to help you enjoy them. One of the most popular trails is the Volcano Route in the Cumbre National Park. The five-hour hike takes in glorious views of the volcanic landscape. La Caldera de Taburiente National Park also has some fantastic trails featuring verdant forests, waterfalls and deep valleys.
La Palma is also a fantastic place to enjoy the night sky. For some memorable stargazing, head to the observatories at Roque de los Muchachos.
