Leon features on the famous Camino de Santiago, which is a pilgrimage route in northwest Spain that ends in Santiago de Compostela. It’s also a lovely destination for a city break and has several mountain ranges for a backdrop. In the old quarter, you’ll find lots of pretty streets lined with historic buildings. Two highlights are the cathedral and Basilica de San Isidoro. Casa Botines is another architectural gem. It will be of particular interest to Gaudi fans as it was designed by the famous architect. It’s actually one of the very few buildings Gaudi designed outside of Catalonia.
For a more modern take on Leon, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MUSAC) is definitely worth a visit. As well as housing an impressive art collection, MUSAC is a cultural centre and features a shopping area. MUSAC has multicoloured blocks of colour on its facade, which sets it apart from many of the buildings in the city. They also make it hard to miss!
Beyond Leon, there’s more to see with a car hire. Castrillo de los Polvazares and Astorga are two other fantastic cities with beautiful historic centres. Like Leon, Astorga also has a building (the Episcopal Palace) designed by Gaudi. You’ll find it close to the cathedral.
In addition to pretty towns, you’re spoilt for choice in terms of natural landscapes in the region. The Fuentes Carrionas Nature Reserve is about an hour east of Leon and the Picos de Europa National Park is north of the city.
