Melilla Airport serves the Spanish autonomous city of Melilla on the North African coast. The city is actually one of two Spanish enclaves there – the other being Cueta, which is around 400kms away. Both share a border with Morocco and if you’re planning to cross the border into Morocco, remember that you will need to go through the relevant customs and border procedures. You can fly to Melilla from Madrid Airport or Malaga Airport. There are also regular ferries to Melilla’s port from Malaga, Motril and Almeria on Spain’s southern coast.

Melilla has always been an important trading city and it’s a lively, multicultural and fascinating one to explore. The old town, referred to as El Pueblo, is surrounded by historic city walls and features several forts and churches. Beyond this old fortified city, Melilla is rather more modernist. Indeed, it has one of the largest collection of Modernist buildings outside of Barcelona. To explore Melilla’s modernist side, head to Avenida de Juan Carlos I and Plaza España. The city also has several beaches and water sports are a popular activity.
As befits a multicultural city, you can find a fantastic array of dishes in Melilla. Like many Spanish cities on the sea, seafood is very popular. Spicy lamb kebabs, couscous and Indian samosas are also foodie highlights.
