Murcia Airport (or Murcia-San Javier Airport to give its full name) is located in the southeast coast of Spain and is most convenient for beaches on the Costa Calida. Other airports in the region include Alicante Airport and Almeria Airport.

AENA who was recently awarded the contract to manage a new airport in the Murcia region (in Corvera) has said that it plans to transfer operations from Murcia-San Javier Airport to the new one. It will then close Murcia-San Javier Airport. We’ll keep this page updated as it progresses. You can read more in our story below.

Located just a few kilometres from San Javier and the beach town of Santiago de la Ribera, other nearby beach resorts include La Manga del Mar Menor, Cartagena and Mazarron. Torrevieja in the Costa Blanca is also only 30kms north of the airport. With a car hire, it’s easy to get around and explore the area.

Many visitors flying into Murcia head straight to La Manga del Mar Menor. It’s a long strip of land that’s about 21kms long and only 100m wide on average. The Mediterranean Sea is on one side and Mar Menor, a seawater lagoon, is on the other. For sun, sand and sea seekers you can see why it’s so popular. The strip caters for tourists and outside the long summer season, it can feel fairly deserted.

30kms south of the airport, Cartagena is a lovely port city that offers a different Costa Calida experience to La Manga. The old quarter is great for wandering around in and offers visitors the chance to take in some of the city’s historical sites such as the cathedral, Castillo de la Concepcion and Roman theatre. The nearest beach is a couple of kilometres away from the port at Cala Cortina.

Mazarron (or Puerto Mazarron, specifically) is another popular destination. It boasts several beaches but the city itself has fewer cultural sites than Cartagena.
