The historic city of Santiago de Compostela is the last stop on the famous ‘Camino de Santiago’. The Camino is actually a series of pilgrim trails, which all stop at Santiago de Compostela. However some pilgrims continue on to Finisterre on the coast.
The city is most noteworthy for its magnificent cathedral. It’s a beautiful piece of architecture that has Gothic and Baroque features. The cathedral is also home to the tomb of Santiago, which is the primary reason for people making the pilgrimage to the city. The food is another clear highlight. To enjoy a taste of Galicia, make your way to the old town where you’ll find plenty of restaurants and taverns serving the local cuisine. ‘Pulpo Gallego’, which is octopus served with sea salt, olive oil and smoked paprika, is a local favourite. The Galician empanada is another popular dish and is offered with a variety of fillings. In addition to these, the Tarta de Santiago is a must – particularly if you’ve got a sweet tooth. The dish is an almond cake often decorated with the cross of Saint James.
With a car hire, you can see more beyond the famous city. The wild coastline is dotted with beaches, fishing villages and dramatic inlets. O Grove, which is about an hour’s drive south of Santiago de Compostela, is a particular highlight. Located on a peninsula, the beach town is famous for its seafood and holds an annual festival to celebrate it every October. The town is also a popular summer getaway as a result of its fine beaches.
